A FEAR-FREE APPROACH TO IMPROVISATION FOR THE CLASSICALLY-TRAINED MUSICIAN
This clinic/course is specifically for the classically trained musician -- designed to demystify the fear as well as the notion that one must be born with the talent to improvise and "play by ear". This workshop offers accessible
techniques and concepts that can be applied not only to jazz but also to any
style of music and for any instrument.
A JAZZ FLUTE SURVEY/RETROSPECTIVE
This course/workshop gives an overview of the styles and development of the flute in jazz with musical examples beginning with the first recorded jazz solo of Wayman Carver to cuts by many of the loading jazz flutists of the day. It
includes over 30 recent interviews of living legends such as Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann and Paul Horn answering pertinent questions of interest to both flute soloists and doublers. An extensive listening list/discography is handed out.
CREATIVE COMPOSITION FOR THE SMALL ENSEMBLE
Designed for the experienced jazz composer as well as the player who hasn't
composed, this course/clinic offers a range of techniques to get the student
writing! We will incorporate concepts from traditional jazz compositions as
well as other styles of music (including classical, Brazilian, world music,
etc.) and look at different ways of orchestrating for the small group.
CREATING ONE'S OWN STYLE
Of course, just like learning any language, a jazz musician must study and
mimic "the greats" in order to learn the idiom. This course/workshop is designed to show the student how to take the next step towards developing one's own style. Through composition, listening and analysis techniques of others' styles and idiosyncrasies as well as one's own, and examining one's influences - students can acquire tools useful for this lifelong pursuit.
JAZZ FLUTE TECHNIQUE IS NOT AN OXYMORON
This course or workshop is designed for both the classically-trained
flutist and reed doubler to focus on techniques for articulation,
vibrato, tone and feel which are more appropriate to the different jazz
styles (i.e. swing, be-bop, straight-eighth, blues, etc.) and includes
exercises and a jazz flute listening list/discography.
